2014-11-10 Precious Moments in Carthage, MO

We've had a slow air leak in one of our 5th wheel tires so I located a tire shop, Karnes Pro Tire and Auto Shop, and gave them a call. We hooked up the trailer to the truck and drove it over. They were able to locate a nail in the tire and they fixed it - all within an hour and only a $15 charge. Totally awesome service.

Within a few miles of our RV park, Big Red Barn RV, is the Precious Moments complex consisting of a huge gift shop, a cafe, gardens, and the Chapel.

Precious Moments are those cute little... Oh, heck. Here's what they look like.

You may have never heard of him, but Sam Butcher is the man responsible for all of these characters. He started way back in 1974 with just drawings. Eventually in 1978 he was approached by Enesco to create porcelain figurines.

With the success and popularity of the figurines he created a foundation and then in 1989 the Precious Moments complex in Carthage.

The highlight of the area is the Chapel.

Inside are panels of drawings that Mr. Butcher has done.

Most represent a story from the Bible.

The ceiling has even been painted and just this past Spring he came back and added a better color to the clouds.

We arrived just as a tour was starting and it's fortunate that we did. Each of the panels does have a meaning and it was enjoyable to hear what the artists intent was for the drawing.

This one is about a child entering heaven.

There are also stained glass panels

They used to schedule weddings on this little island.

Mr. Butcher has even created his own words on his tombstone.

Garden area

Mr. Butcher spends most of his time in the Phillipines these days and occasionally comes back to add something to his paintings at the Chapel.
