2014-11-04 Lebanon and Route 66

There are some cities along the Route that just embrace this Route 66 culture. They encourage the old businesses to stay alive and they promote the Route and welcome the travelers. Lebanon, MO has that feel.

We are staying in an "RV Park" behind the Forest Manor Motel on Route 66. Couldn't get any better than that you say? Well, conditions were not ideal, nor was the RV Park.

Our first stop today was about 5 miles east, an institution along the Route for memorabilia shoppers - Mr C's Route Post. I think this is just a side business for Mr. C. He owns the formula for the Route 66 Sodas. We've seen them everywhere along the Route.

Next door to our "RV Park" is Historic Wrink's Market. This market has been open since 1949. Glenn "Wrink" Wrinkle died 10 years ago and the market has now been closed.

In Lebanon they had a K-Mart store that closed. The city bought it and turned it into a library and a Route 66 Museum. See what I mean. Embrace the Route.

Great diorama of an old gas station.

There were lots of displays about how roads got better and better because of the materials they used.

Maps were plentiful and let you see how the Route connected cities through each of the states and then as traffic got worse the cities were bypassed by the Route 66 Bypass.

Another diorama reminding us of the mom and pop diners along the Route.

Definitely one of the best Route 66 museums we've been to.

Down the road on the Interstate just before you crossed over into Kansas was a Rest Stop.

Wouldn't you like YOUR Rest Stop to have picnic areas like these? There were a dozen of these. Cutest thing ever in a rest stop.

It was getting dark which was fortunate, because they turned on the Welcome Center sign that was paying an homage to the Munger Moss Motel sign.

Across the street from our "RV Park" WAS the Munger Moss Motel - another institution on Route 66. Opened in 40's and recently renovated.
